摘要:This year in Vancouver, outside a symposium was a gentleman
standing with an infant in a stroller, waiting
with the child while his spouse/partner listened to a
paper. This couple (and others like them) was visible
throughout the conference¡ªswitching off childcare so each
parent could maximize their time at the SAAs. Also present
were several people who are half of a dual-career couple in
anthropology. These couples needed to decide which one of
the parents should stay home with the child/children while
the other attended the conference. We each have young children,
and one of us (Bowser) has juggled childcare and conferences
for years. The other of us (Berg) is lucky that I generally
do not have to struggle with this situation, because my
husband is not an archaeologist and thinks our meetings are
no fun (I let him believe this), so he stays home with the children
so that I can attend the annual conference without the
concern of childcare. Many of our members do not have this
luxury.
