In the existing literature path dependence is a subject of investigation on different levels, including technological standards, institutional frameworks, institutions and organizations. Yet in existing approaches the interaction of path dependencies on different levels is not sufficiently considered. The paper aims at developing a concept in order to describe path dependencies and their interaction on multiple levels. Based on the original approach concerning the path dependence of technological standards an extended perspective is developed to characterise the interactions of path dependencies on multiple levels. The paper suggests an addition to the existing path dependence approach, by introducing the concepts of coupling, co-evolution and self-similarity to deal with path dependency as a multi-level phenomenon. Finally, as a result of the theoretical extensions introduced, the altered conditions for change and stability of social structures are discussed.
