Organized under the influence of the reform of the University of
Coimbra under the enlightenment perspective, the Seminary of Olinda
established for the Bishop D.Azeredo Coutinho, of its innovative aspects if
constituted in a hallmark event in the history of the education in sciences in
Brazil. In the present work, it is intended to identify and to analyze the
estimated ones of the education of the natural philosophy in the Seminary of
Olinda (1800-1817), as well as the constitution of its you discipline such as
natural history, chemistry and the physics. The defined natural philosophy as
the study of everything what it belongs of the nature, is the part that manifest
the radically modern orientation of the project of Azeredo Coutinho. It was
accurately this modernity that appeared first time in Brazil, in the Seminary of
Olinda. In Coimbra the natural philosophy beyond the classroom had new
spaces of learning: the museum of natural history; the botanical garden; the
cabinet of experimental physics and the chemistry laboratory. The same
organization adopted for Azeredo Coutinho, would have to guide the formation
of the “priests philosophers” in the Seminary of Olinda. It enters the
“naturalists” of Coimbra and the “priests philosophers” of Olinda it existed the
common objective of the utilitarian application of sciences in benefit of the
lusitanian colonial empire.
