摘要：The present paper discusses a series of theoretical and methodological issues concerning the relations between religion and therapy in Brazil. Following a brief review of anthropological approaches to subject, it presents the reflections developed by Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Michel Foucault on the theme of the body, with the aim of articulating at a theotrical level the ideas of bodily engagement and production of meaning. This articulation actually proves central for the understanding of the ways by which affliction may be transformed in religious contexts. In order to explore the potential of the proposed approach, the author presents a brief analysis of cases of affliction treated within two different agencies within the Brazilian religious field : the candomblé and pentecostalism.
