  • 摘要:Ana Carrigan's proclamation that the Zapatista rebellion in southeastern Mexico is the world's "first post-modern revolution" can be taken in as many ways as there are definitions of the hackneyed term "post-modern.".1 Certainly, the rebellion marks a liberation of many "others." Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos describes the uprising as "all the minorities…untolerated, oppressed, resisting, exploding, saying 'Enough'."2 The post-modern rebellion brings to the attention of the privileged ignorant the face of the other, not to make it known but to present it as it is, largely unknowable unless the familiar becomes unfamiliar. The now astonishingly familiar, but still unknown faces of "all the minorities" in Chiapas have even come to be seen only because they are masked and defiant. The mountain areas of southeast Mexico are in Zapatista rebel hands. "And these Zapatistas are very otherly.... These Zapatistas neither vanquish nor die, but nor do they surrender, and they despise martyrdom as much as capitulation. Very otherly, it's true.... They are rebel indigenous.
