摘要:From its outset, the capitalist system has risen to world-triumph as an all-encompassing economic system. Yet this triumph has become a triumph of capitalist discipline, which has since exhausted the world’s capacity to accommodate it. First, this essay will define capitalist discipline, examining its contours and limitations. Second, the thesis of “exhaustion” will be probed; there are ways in which capitalist discipline has used up its natural substrate. Lastly, an alternative disciplinary concept, “ecological discipline,” will be imagined. The conclusion will discuss why it is especially meaningful at this time to couch the dichotomy between capitalist and ecological systems in terms of different “disciplines.”
