摘要:Transportation-based trade gateways are at the centre of globalization. But as world trade grows, the intensive use of gateways creates a scarcity of resources, generates waste and affects the quality of the environment that challenge the objective of high economic output. These forces can lead to a devaluation of both gateway infrastructure and the capital invested, so the adoption of sustainability measures are potentially the most important issue facing the growth, performance and organization of gateways. However, regulatory uncertainties and the lack of accepted definitions, monitoring standards, verification and organized markets pose challenges to the implementation of sustainability schemes. Based on fieldwork research in Western Europe, North America and East Asia, this study examines the extent to which sustainable development practices affect the competitiveness of the transportation industry. The Asia Pacific Gateway cannot escape these major international trends because it must remain competitive. Research demonstrates that regions that have environmental problems are not competitive globally. There are signs that sustainability measures are already becoming the competitive standard, although the fragmented nature of modal-specific planning in gateways complicates integration efforts.
