摘要:The terrorist attacks on New York and Washington
on September 11, 2001, may not have changed the
world forever, but they certainly brought the uncertainties
of Asia to the forefront of Canadian consciousness.
With Canadian soldiers on the ground in Asia in a combat
role for the first time in half a century, there was a steady
flow of media coverage conveying the message that at
least some of Asia is a very unstable place. Whether stories
depict military operations in Afghanistan, bomb blasts
in the southern Philippines, sectarian violence in Indonesia,
or bankruptcies and layoffs in Japan, the picture is
of a troubled and uninviting region. But these are snapshots
of the most extreme problems in what remains
overall a peaceful, dynamic region that is home to 60% of
humanity. Against this background of negative images, it
is more important than ever that Canadians involved in
business, policymaking or other relationships with Asia
have access to informed, balanced and up-to-date information
and analysis. The Asia Pacific Foundation of
Canada, as the national think-tank on Canada-Asia relations,
provides these tools.
