摘要:In 1998, the Canadian Journal of
Administrative Sciences devoted
an entire issue to the topic of downsizing
and its impact. Its message
was that downsizing was on the
rise, was a tremendous problem
both for those who lost their jobs
and those who did not, and was not
a very effective way for companies
to address the challenges associated
with global competition. The journal
is not alone in conveying that
message, which has been rampant
in the North American media for the
past decade. To the extent the message
is true, it suggests research is
needed to help businesses make
more realistic assessments of the
costs and benefits of downsizing. It
also raises major policy questions
about what kind of assistance is
most helpful for displaced workers.
