摘要:The 1990s were, as Thomas
D¡¯Aquino tells us, a decade of
poor Canadian economic and social
performance that saw a widening
gap between Canadian and U.S. living
standards. Many observers will
be struck more by the irony than the
truth of this assertion, given the
Business Council on National Issues¡¯
promises of robust growth
and productivity gains from free
trade and economic liberalization,
and the high level of convergence of
BCNI positions and government
policies over the decade. It is doubly
ironic that the council expresses
strong concern about corporate disinvestment
and hard not to read
such ¡°concern¡± as a veiled threat.
The lack of critical self-reflection in
this latest broadside and its aggressive
tone toward a federal government
that compliantly delivered on
the tax cut agenda in the 2000
Budget struck an understandable
off-note with most commentators
and the public.
