摘要:Corporate social responsibility is becoming
a major issue for an increasing number of
companies of all sizes in the UK. According
to UK Department of Trade and Industry figures,
approximately 80% of FTSE 100 companies
now provide information about their performance
on social responsibility matters, demonstrating a
growing recognition of the importance to core
business of such issues as protection of the environment,
use of natural resources and their impact
on society as a whole. (See the ¡°Developing Corporate
Social Responsibility in the UK DTI¡± Web
site, www.societyandbusiness.gov.uk.)
Within the context of CSR, sustainable development
underpins many of these issues, balancing
the three elements of the triple bottom line ¨C
environmental, social and economic components
¨C and helping organizations to move towards business
viability in the long term.
There has been growing corporate interest in
environmental issues. However, an organization
carrying out its day-to-day business can also have
substantial social impacts on employees, suppliers,
customers, and particularly on the local community
within which it operates. Poor relationships
with local people may create significant problems
for businesses. They are often caused by comparatively
minor and easily resolved issues such as parking,
noise, or perceived lack of consideration by the
company in general.
A recently completed BRE project, ¡°Working
with the Community¡±, investigated these impacts
with a view to enhancing relationships between
the construction industry and local communities.
Although research focused on construction projects,
the lessons learned are relevant to any type
and size of organization in any sector.
