摘要：‘Europe needs growth from the ground, and all regions
must contribute if we are to succeed in boosting
competitiveness and employment in the EU as a
whole,’ stressed Commissioner Hübner. Although
the report indicates that development disparities in
the EU are narrowing due to the rapid and sustained
growth in the least prosperous Member
States, it also highlights the persistence of signifi -
cant disparities at regional level. In particular it reveals
‘worrying disparities in terms of modern
infrastructure, research and education, which limits
our capacity for excellence and innovation. Regional
policy will continue to play a vital role over
the next decade in closing these gaps and helping
the European economy to realise its full potential.’
