摘要：In the near future, I will enter my fourth
decade as a trade union official spanning a
career from local shop steward to General
Secretary of the ICEM. Over those 40 years,
companies and trade unions have changed--
sometimes changing beyond all recognition.
However, the underlying philosophies of
companies and unions haven't changed to
anything to the same degree. Trade unions
continue to seek to defend the material interests
of their members, to fight injustice and to
promote fairness and equity. Companies continue
to seek to make profits, to grow and to
have a long-term future. Sometimes these
aims are mutually compatible; sometimes
they lead to conflict and the need for dialogue
and resolution.
