摘要:This paper explores the economic consequences of the
enlargement of the European Union (EU) with countries from
Central and Eastern Europe (CEEC). Our paper focuses on
integration aspects that go beyond the reduction of formal
trade barriers, namely accession to the internal market and
expected migration flows. We assess the impact of the accession
to the internal market for sixteen industries by estimating
gravity equations. The estimates provide an indication of trade
flows that would exist once these countries become full members
of the EU. Comparing this potential trade with actual
trade, we arrive at an estimate of the long-run impact of the
CEEC¡¯s accession to the EU internal market. This estimate is
used as an input for our model simulations with CPB¡¯s CGE
model for the world economy (WorldScan). This step allows us
to gauge the full general equilibrium impact of the CEEC¡¯s
accession to the EU.
