摘要:This paper analyses the incentives and possible consequences
for international wage coordination in Europe. Because of the
heterogeneity of wage bargaining institutions in the EU,
opportunities for wage coordination are not very strong in the
short run. Softer coordination, e.g. in the form of information
exchange or agreements on common rules in wage setting, is
more likely to occur and has already been introduced in some
cases. If stronger forms of international wage coordination
would take off in the longer term, the bargaining power of
trade unions would be strengthened relative to firms. The
implications for wages and unemployment are ambiguous.
International wage coordination also affects wage flexibility,
and may reduce the flexibility of wages to absorb asymmetric
shocks.
