摘要:Safeguarding the health of the nation’s children is a public health priority.
Almost one-third of U.S. children aged 2 to 19 are either overweight or obese,
yet many of these children are also undernourished. Most children do not consume
recommended servings of low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables,
and whole grains – identified as “Food Groups to Encourage” by the 2005 Dietary
Guidelines for Americans. As a result, many children have low intakes of
calcium, potassium, fiber, magnesium, and vitamin E (i.e., “nutrients of
concern”), which are critical to their growth and development.
