56 procedures and almost 4 years. “We do not have any
lawsuits pending—we simply avoid the courts. By the
time the judge decides the case, the defendant’s assets
have disappeared. In the end the only ones gaining from
lawsuits are the lawyers,” says Sriram, a beverage manufacturer
in Mumbai. Foreign investors share this view:
fewer of them set up shop in India than in any other
large emerging economy (figure 10.1).
