摘要:The impact of integration on growth, in particular, the economic growth
of the European region, and especially that of the European Union (EU),
has been analyzed, not only through the application of commonly used
theoretical models, but also in the light of specific characteristics of its
economic and political integration. A special focus has been placed on
the potential growth advantages that the EU may provide to its members.
The most recent round of EU enlargement in May 2004 has brought
further interest in the growth implications of the enlargement. In this
paper, we further investigate the determinants of the growth patterns in
the EU-15 group. Besides the analysis of common growth determinants,
special interest is placed on the influence of variables that may capture
the impact of integration, such as trade flows and the measures of trade
barriers. Furthermore, we are particularly interested in another possible
growth determinant in the form of foreign direct investment (FDI), as an
additional potential proxy for measuring the integration benefits of FDI
on growth, besides the widely analyzed “trade-induced investment-led”
economic growth.
