摘要:This research introduces the reality of Farm to School (FTS) programs of the U.S. and offers some guidance, from which some applications can be employed in Korea’s school lunch programs. In the FTS programs, schools use local agricultural products for school food in an aim to provide farmers with the opportunity to market the products and students with the opportunity to consume fresh and nutritious food. The FTS programs, which connect the local farms with schools, are spreading at a rapid pace in the U.S. despite their limiting factors. Unlike the conventional school food programs, the FTS programs that use local food not only promote local farming but also help to increase the income of local farmers by promoting the consumption of local agricultural products. Furthermore, they contribute to children’s health and nutrition. The FTS programs are actively involved in food education as well. This research shows that the importance of central and local governments’ supports, the need for participation of NGOs and universities, and an answer to the limiting factors borne in schools and farmers. The FTS programs can be used as guiding rules that are adoptable when schools use local food in Korea.
