摘要:Does technological change amount to accumulation of general, and so trans-
ferable, human capital? Or rather, does technological change reduce the trans-
ferability of skill by increasing the technological distance between industries?
Using US panel data on individual wages and mobility decisions, between 1982
and 1990, a period of rapid technological change in all manufacturing sectors,
I approach these questions and investigate whether there is a di¤erential e¤ect
of technological innovation and di¤usion on wages and workers.mobility. The
main results are that technological innovation reduces workers.mobility while
di¤usion positively impacts upon the workers.chances to move across industries,
particularly within broad industrial sectors. The .ndings reported suggest that
indeed technological innovation and di¤usion signi.cantly alter the transferabil-
ity of workers.skills across sectors, the former decreasing it, the latter increasing
skill transferability.
