Better Beginnings, Better Futures is a program whose purpose is to prevent emotional and behaviour problems. It is designed for children under eight years old who live in socially and economically disadvantaged Ontario communities. Since 1991, a team of researchers has been evaluating the impact of this project’s programs on children, their families and the community. This article presents the results of the study eight years after the beginning of the project. After the first four years, researchers observed an increase in pro-social behaviour, an improvement in the children’s health, a decrease in behavioural problems, and a decrease in the number of children having difficulties. Four years later, a decrease in behaviour problems linked to hyperactivity and a decrease in the number of children having problems remains stable. However, the program has not had any effects of the students’ cognitive development.
