In this article, the author approaches the social bond from the angle of developing the human skills of autonomy, social cooperation and public participation. First, it situates these skills in the context of the Programme de formation de l’école québécoise (MEQ, 2001, 2003). It presents the parents or the family as project managers for socializing young people to become responsible citizens who participate in society. The article is based on two theoretical models: the contextual model of parenting style (Darling and Steinberg, 1993) and the model of the parent participation process (Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler, 1997). The article is enriched with research results on the socialization of autonomy and school success, among other aspects. It also includes some reflections from a parents’ self-observation process. The author demonstrates that parental influence processes are very important, regardless of the socialization goal.
