摘要：The study sets out to highlight the main parameters (as commonly identified in various earlier similar studies on the subject), which are seen to have contributed to the "miraculous" development in the East Asia, a region which has attracted considerable interest among the scholars in recent years. It is generally agreed that the “the East Asian Miracle", as the term coined, has somewhat challenged the orthodox pattern of development, which addresses to capital accumulation per se under surplus labor. As the model has demonstrated, there may be different facets of development, based on socio-economic, cultural, and political determinants. The model, which brings together a synthesis of common denominators within countries of the region, turns out to be a significant experience for the developing countries as well as for Turkey. The study pinpoints in a summary form those variables that have by and large contributed to the miracle. Yet, the financial crisis of July 1997 which had first emerged in Thailand and contagiously spread throughout the region and beyond has overshadowed the myth. The study moves to look into the critical factors that are singled out to be the main culprit for the demise of the East Asian economies. For a typical emerging market like Turkey, there are indeed important lessons to be drawn from this event, which has not only devastated the region, but had far reaching implications globally. Despite the heavy price paid, and the unprecedented size of the international efforts mobilized to rehabilitate the economies of the region, the argument can not be easily brushed away that the miracle was not based on superfluous premises, specially in the light of such positive trends towards recovery.
