The efficient use of reading strategies has been associated with a better performance on reading comprehension in each schooling levels. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reading comprehension and the use of reading strategies on elementary school students. The sample was constituted of 67 students of the second to fourth grade of the public elementary school, of these, 50,70% were female and 49,3% male, between 7 and 13 years old (M = 9,04; SD = 1,38). It was used the Cloze test and the Metacognitive Reading Strategies Scale. The oldest students and on more advanced grades presented better performance in the compression of reading and a less use of reading strategies. The performance of reading comprehension in girls was better, as well as your use of reading strategies. The association between the reading comprehension variable and the use of reading strategies was null.
