摘要：Why do we need marine
aggregates?
As a basic ingredient of concrete,
aggregates (sand and gravel)
are used for buildings, road
maintenance and construction,
including development projects
such as the 2012 Olympic Games
sites. One of the main benefits of
using marine aggregates is that
vessels can deliver them directly
to wharves in urban areas where
the demand is greater, which
helps reduce pollution. More
than a fifth of the sand and
gravel used in England and
Wales, rising to about a third in
south-east England, comes from
the seabed. Marine aggregates
are also used to replenish
beaches damaged by coastal
erosion.
