1999 (October 1998-March
1999), USDA¡¯s spending on
domestic food assistance programs
fell. If this trend continues for the
entire year, it will mark the third
consecutive year in which annual
expenditures on food assistance
programs declined.
USDA spent $17.2 billion on
domestic food assistance programs
in the first half of 1999, almost 3
percent less than in the same
period in fiscal 1998 (table 1). In fiscal
1998, total annual food assistance
expenditures were 6 percent
less than the previous fiscal year.
