摘要：A national system of protected areas, representing all major ecological
regions and their associated plant and animal communities, has been
proposed for Australia¡¯s marine territory. The process of selecting
these areas began in 1998, with the mapping of ¡®bioregions¡¯, based on
information about climate, oceanography, geology, geomorphology,
biota and estuaries. Detailed studies now needed to identify
biologically important areas on a smaller scale.
