摘要:USDA oversees a number of
food-assistance programs
whose goals are to provide
people with access to a more nutritious
diet, to improve the eating
habits of the Nation¡¯s children, and
to help America¡¯s farmers by providing
an outlet to distribute foods
purchased under commodity pricesupport
programs (see box on domestic
food-assistance programs).
For the first 6 months of fiscal 1996
(October 1995-March 1996), USDA
spent $19.7 billion on food-assistance
programs. Expenditures were
0.5 percent lower than the same period
in fiscal 1995 (table 1). If the
trend is found to have continued for
the entire year, it would mark the
first decrease in annual total foodassistance
program expenditures
since fiscal 1982 (fig. 1). However,
the rate of change in expenditures
for individual food-assistance programs
varied greatly, with some
programs expanding and others decreasing
significantly.
