摘要：The present paper aims at analysing the South and West Oltenia from the demographic size
and rural settlements density point of view. The three county territorial-administrative units, which
make up the analysed area, have a population that accounts for 7 per cent of the total population.
Using the data of the last census, there have been identified 7 categories of villages and communes
according to the demographic size. The villages with less than 500 inhabitants have the highest rate
(52.8 percent), then the communes with 2,001-3,000 inhabitants (about 30 percent). The diversity of
the rural habitat is illustrated also by the surface of the administrative territory, the population
density, and the number of the commune component villages. With regard to the density of the rural
settlements, the study reveals that the highest frequency of the localities is registered in the areas with
small settlements, while the lowest densities appear in the areas with large settlements.
