摘要：The author's research focuses on demographic processes of urban population in L'viv district in the period of economics transformations. There is also a characteristics of urban network in the region presented as well as earlier, that is, in the years 1950-1989, tendencies in population development.
The analyses carried out in the paper concern changes in the number of inhabitants in two types of places: towns and urban settlements. The role of natural increase, migration movements and administrative changes are taken into account. But the main aim of the work is to show differentiation of demographic dynamics in various types of towns, in connection with their localization and economic functions.
On the basis of the research, the conclusion is stated that dynamics of population development in the examined district has been distincly weaking in the second half of the 20th century. This process has started in the middle of the seventies and has become more intense in the period of transformation, which is bound, to some extent, with consequences of the economic crisis.
Despite a general decline in urban population, observed in L'viv district from 1994, the majority of the towns and urban settlements show development or stabilization as regards the number of their inhabitants in the years 1989-2001. Dynamics of population changes depends mainly on socio-economic features of the towns and their attractiveness for people.
