摘要:At the beginning of transformation, Poland and Ukraine were characterized by significant deficit of dwellings. Moreover, a great part of the dwellings was not equipped with basic installations, e.g. central heating and water-line system. Such a situation made inhabitants life conditions very difficult.
The paper deals with some issues regarding the development of housing construction in both mentioned countries after collapse of comunism. The subject is of exceptional importance due to vital role for socio-economic improvement of the countries. Tendencies in housing construction can be considered as one of the main indexes that reflect changes in economy.
Comparison of housing situation in Poland and Ukraine allows to present some differencies and similarities between these two countries. In general, the rate of development in new housing construction was rather low during the whole period of transformation. As consequences of various economic conditions of inhabitants, differencies in the number of dwellings completed can be observed. Much more houses are built in towns and suburban areas than in typically rural areas.
Standard of dwellings in Ukraine was distincly lower than in Poland. Ukrainian houses had less usable floor space and were worse equipped with installations.
Despite low level, new housing construction has noticeable influence on inprovement of housing situation. New buildings are bigger and more modern.
