摘要:This paper deals with the exploration of fisheries co-management in the North Atlantic
after the 200-nautical-mile declaration in the late 1970s. A general introduction into
fisheries management and the problem of overfishing will be given first. Thereafter,
two of the most popular fisheries of the North Atlantic, Newfoundland and Iceland,
will be compared.
To ensure a holistic investigation of fisheries, resource economic as well as historic
data have to be considered. The historical background provides a significant basis for
discovering interrelations in fisheries. In consequence, the investigation of the development
of a fishing nation and its fleet, its access rights to fishing grounds, implementation
of management measures or co-operations with fisheries bodies reveals findings
about the long-term success of fisheries management. For this, different indicators are
needed to show potential parallels. This discussion paper examines the comanagement
approach in fisheries of Newfoundland and Iceland and poses the ques-tion if co-management did make a difference for the success of the implementation of
fisheries management goals.
