Thispaperexamines—bymeansoftheexampleoftheSt.Peters-burgparadox—howBorelexpositedthescienceofhisday.ThefirstpartsketchesthesingularplaceofpopularizationinBorel’swork.ThetwopartsthatfollowgiveachronologicalpresentationofBorel’scon-tributionstotheSt.Petersburgparadox,contributionsthatevolvedoveraperiodofmorethanfiftyyears.TheseshowhowBorelattackedtheproblembypositioningitinalong—andscientificallyveryrich—meditationontheparadoxofmartingales,thosesystemsofplaythatpurporttomakeagamblertossingacoinrich.Borelgaveanorigi-nalsolutiontothisproblem,anticipatingthefundamentalequalityofthenascentmathematicaltheoryofmartingales.TheparadoxicalroleplayedbyF´elixLeDantecinthedevelopmentofBorel’sthoughtonthesethemesishighlighted.AnappendixrecastsBorel’smartingalesinmodernterms.
