degradation. Mandates for action
(the most recent being the Plan of Implementation
from the World Summit on Sustainable
Development, and the UN Millennium Goals)
are there. We – governments, business and civil
society – have committed to make change a
reality. Our challenges now lie in the speed
with which we move ahead. We need to do the job faster because
people’s lives and the health of the planet are at stake. Over the next
two days I want you to discuss and identify concrete and practical
areas of work – projects, initiatives, partnerships – that can bring
about change at ground level, and that can create models for others
to adapt, improvise and follow. The focus has to be on implementation.
