摘要:The study presents how the environment or social and economic conditions can determine different forms of water supply. It also describes factors influencing, presently and in the past, the development of water supply systems in rural areas of the Lublin Region. There has been proved a strong relationship between the development of water supply systems and the depth of ground-water layers, a distance from the bigger towns of the region, a type of the rural settlements and development of non-agricultural activities on the area of rural municipalities of the Lublin region. The collected data show that the earliest water supply systems have been built in those parts of the Lublin voivodship, which have had the biggest problems with an access to deep laying ground-waters. The other parts of the voivodship, particularly those, where the waters lay low and are easily accessible, had a poor development of water facilities, although those waters are of bad quality on account of contamination.
Introducing a market economy and the administration reform in Poland at the beginning of the 90's brought a change of the trends in water supply in rural areas, that had been established during the previous political regime. From that time self-governments started to be responsible for establishing a hierarchy of investment needs in a municipality. Thus, from the beginning of the 90's a clear improvement in the development of modern forms of water supply to the rural areas can be observed, particularly in the northern part of the voivodship, that has been neglected so far in this field.
