摘要：The paper analyses the patent and trademark holdings of 2049 Welsh production companies by mapping them against firm size, sector of activity, ownership (Welsh versus non-Welsh) and location (Unitary Authority). Summary comparisons are made with data from other regions in order to put the Welsh performance into context. Welsh firms appear relatively aware of and active in the appropriation of knowledge assets. However, their ‘productivity’, in the sense of the number of assets generated per firm, is weak, with a high proportion of single-asset firms. The spatial distribution of holdings within Wales is uneven and does not necessarily accord with expectations. Some Objective-1 areas do very well on patenting while rural areas in the north and west do well in trademarking. The latter finding suggests that cultural distinctiveness is a public asset that can be exploited to private advantage.
