摘要:The popularization of the phrase ‘affirmative action’ (AA) in Brazil is surrounded by ambiguities. A review of general and specialized literature on the topic shows on the one hand that there is a direct association of those policies with “quotas”. Furthermore, AA is often reduced, especially in higher education, as exclusively beneficial to afro-descendants. Both associations are wrong. This paper presents different perspectives and justifications that allow for a better and more complete understanding of AA emerged from three sources: a) analysis of the conceptual debates about AA, race and education; b) analysis of trends presented in interviews with 36 key informant about the theme; and c) analyses editorial and opinion articles published in one of the most influential Brazilian newspapers, O Globo.
