摘要:The present essay offers an outline of patristic teaching on the general notion of inspiration of Sacred Scripture. Original texts of the Fathers are drawn upon heavily, since modern scholarship has largely abandoned this field of research and secondary literature is scant. This first essay (of two) focuses in the first place on the way the Scriptures refer to themselves and how the Church Fathers follow this vocabulary proposed by the sacred texts, and secondly on the doctrine on inspiration in the Apostolic Fathers, the Apologists, and the Alexandrian Fathers (Clement and Origen). A second essay (to be published) will cover the Antiochian exegetical school and the most important Latin Fathers, among them Ambrose, Jerome, and Augustine.
