摘要:This paper looks at the gendered exploitation of rural children living in St-Louis, Senegal to help better understand their specific survival strategies. It is a comparative study of two cases of child exploitation and the gendered disparities that exist between them: domestic girl workers and boy talibés. The paper identifies gendered differences and similarities between the two cases. Further, the paper looks at the main factors leading to rural parents sending their children to the city. The field research conducted for this paper consisted of semi-directed interviews as well as direct observation in St-Louis, Senegal from May to July 2009; interviews were conducted with community groups involved in children’s rights. The fieldwork was then completed by a desk review of pertinent literature and publications related to the topic in order to confirm the findings of the interviews.
