摘要：The main objective of this investigation consists of a
review of the theoretical and empirical links between globalization,
regional integration and cooperative development. Our investigation is
structured in two parts. The first part consists of a systematic review of
existing literature concerning the phenomena of globalization and re-
gional integration. The bibliographical review is supplemented by the
analysis of two regional integration experiences: the European Union
and MERCOSUR. The second part of the investigation presents a com-
parative analysis of four national cases of cooperative businesses. The
case analysis attempts to advance comprehension of existing links
between globalization and cooperative development. Our conclusions
show that the exportation performance of these cooperatives is asso-
ciated with the development of specific capacities allowing them to
compete in international commerce. Factors such as organizational
leadership, human resource training, the introduction of technology
and the identity of the cooperative nucleus, are key. Results are am-
biguous with respect to the particular importance of the phenomena of
regional integration, although the nonexistence of regional policies of
cooperative promotion stands out on both national and supranational
levels.
