摘要:This article presents a panoramic view of the use of pesticides in Brazil, the largest pesticide consumer in Latin America, and discusses the country’s political and economic determinants regarding the use of these products. Data analysis revealed some determinants of pesticides use impacts on worker’s health, such as: the systematic migration of the family agriculture model to the industrial export agriculture; both adults and children cooperate with each other in family agriculture, exposing children and adolescents to a larger number of pesticides-induced health problems; the diversity of harmful effects caused by the exposure to pesticides in the rural work and the variety of socio-cultural determinants of these workers’ exposure; and the limitations of the informational systems and available statistics. Strong political influence that incentives the large exportation agricultural production, almost all associated to the increase of pesticides consumption and natural land degradation. Overcoming this situation is more than a health problem: it is a clear example of the need of integrating health and environment sectors together in the guarantee of rural population quality of life, targeting sustainability as the main objective.
