摘要:This study has the objective of analyzing risk perception in rural farm workers of an agricultural area of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Methods included on-site local participatory observations, work process analyses and semi-structured interviews with key informers. Data analysis revealed several subjects related to this group’s risk perception: the development of strategies to prevent risks at work; the importance of cultural and social determinants to the construction of worker’s references on risk; subjective responses to potentially dangerous situations; and the role of individual and collective perception on risk to determine the amount of exposure to pesticides. The study shows that the main aspects related to risk perception in local rural work are: minimization of risks, denial of danger and development of defensive strategies, aspects determined by labor organization and by individual behaviors that are strongly influenced by the local culture. These aspects must be taken into account when developing effective intervention strategies.
