This article explains the discursive posture assumed by two Venezuelan newspapers regarding the murder of the priest Jorge Piñango and the reaction of the Catholic Church to the declarations emitted by the District Attorney of the Republic. 14 journalistic texts were analyzed, following the critical approaches of Jäger (2003) and van Dijk (1999, 2003, 2005a and 2005b). Results revealed that: a) the Piñango murder was marked by an intense media campaign within the Venezuelan electoral context of 2006; b) El Nacional gave greater relevance to the diatribe between the Catholic Church and officialism, while in Panorama, news details about the priest’s death predominated.
