Urban insecurity attempts against the basic conditions that allow peaceful coexistence in society and endangers or weakens fundamental rights such as quality of life, well- being, health, personal development and the exercise of democratic rights and liberties.. The aim of making a diagnostic of the “sensation of insecurity” variable is to offer some contributing elements to the explanation of which factors affect the sensation of insecurity people have when facing crime and what effects they have on their behavior. This paper presents the results of research aiming at identifying the sensation of insecurity of a sample of the population of the Maracaibo Municipality. A field methodology of descriptive type and level was used with a non experimental, transectional decriptive design. A random, non probabilistic sampling was used. A data gathering questionaire was made, which was validated by a group of experts and the reliability index of 0,88 was obtained by means of the Kuder-Richardson test. The sample consisted of 852 informants, of whom 432 said they did not consider themselves as victims and 420 expressed the opposite. The results indicated that the sensation of insecurity was present in both groups. There were statistically significant differences in the sense that there is a greater sensation of insecurity in the population that has been the object of some crime.
