摘要:In this article, I present some of the tensions between “Modernism” and
“Postmodernism” with regard to research in Physical Education. My approach suggests that the
positivistic paradigm, a paradigm based on objectivity and rationality that has dominated both the
Natural and the Social Sciences, must be critically examined and even put aside on occasion
given that it is not always appropriate to study and understand certain phenomena and aspects of
Physical Education. On the other hand, I suggest that, in order to advance the profession, it is
necessary to include alternative themes and methodologies that so far have been traditionally and
systematically marginalized. In the last section of the article I offer a few examples.
