In this essay, I try to reflect upon the non – formal corporal practice of urban youngsters who skateboard in groups. The particular context in this case is the city of La Plata, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Some of the questions and possible answers that I have formulated in relation to these people, their culture, their practice, their places and objects are here summarised. Although, skateboarding has at times the characteristics of a sport, and it may even appear to be one; a careful análisis reveals that it is closer to a game. The flexibility of its rules, its non —institutional nature, and its strong non —competitive character; lead us to place the skateboarding practised by these youngsters on a ludic pole.
The urban condition of such practice determines its physical experiences and leaves a stamp on this practice. Are these people who skate with their skateboards along the streets looking for something? What are they looking for?
