摘要:Recent emphasis on student leadership development in Malaysia has led to a greater awareness of the need to provide formal leadership training programs and leadership experiences on campuses of higher institutions of learning. While campus initiatives in support of student leadership development have increased, the question that has been overlooked is: “Are our students motivated to lead?” This study examines the motivation to take on leadership roles amongst 1860 undergraduates in public and private institutions of higher learning. Our results indicate an overall moderate level of motivation. Self- knowledge and campus involvement were two major factors that predicted motivation to lead, along with smaller effects, perception of leadership ability in oneself, leadership effectiveness in oneself, and overall perception of the campus initiative in developing student leadership. Age significantly explained the differences in levels of motivation to lead, but not academic year, gender, or CGPA.
