摘要:To read or not to read: is that really the question? This paper analyzes the Brazilian version of The Adventures of Captain Underpants (first volume), attempting to identify the reasons for its sales success. From the sociological standpoint, the story mirrors inconsistencies between social changes and changes in schooling, as well as the curtailment of childhood and the corresponding expansion of adolescence. Pupils’ expectations of a protagonist role in the educational process clash with traditional contents transmission-type schooling. From the linguistic perspective, this work suggests explanations for the intentional use of spelling errors, and identifies conceptual metaphors and the recurrent use of action verbs in constructing characters. It concludes that the innovative graphic resources and plot attract readers who are attributed an active, critical role in the reading process thereby stimulating their appetite for reading.
