摘要:The purpose of this study was to examine possible future trends in emissions of pollutants from the Yangtze River basin (China) that could contribute to acidification (sulphur dioxide), global warming (greenhouse gases), and eutrophication (nitrogen deposition and river export of dissolved inorganic nitrogen). Multiple models were used to quantify these emissions for several scenarios. The overall environmental impact was expressed in one indicator. The results indicate that the overall environmental impact of human activities in the Yangtze River basin may increase by 40 - 45% during the coming thirty years, if current trends continue. More optimistic assumptions resulted in a 5 - 15% reduction by 2030. Greenhouse gas emissions have the largest share in the overall environmental impact. Therefore, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an effective way to reduce the environmental impact of human activities in the Yangtze River basin.
