摘要:This paper aims at contributing to the discussion about the role of writing as a learning tool in the context of Portuguese schools at all levels.
The first part is focussed on theoretical issues: the writing process, some aspects of written communication; the characteristics of written language and how its use may enhance learning.
The second part of this paper analyses the Portuguese context starting by the analysis of the way the question of writing as a learning tool is presented in official documents produced at the Ministry of Education. Afterwards, we refer to several studies developed in Portuguese schools and universities. All these studies aim at describing writing practices and their role in knowledge acquisition and expression. Although they refer to different school levels and use different research methods, their conclusions are coincident in the demonstration that writing is rarely used as a learning tool in Portuguese education.
